Texas National Guard face online threat | | 2008/09/23 | | Hackers have infiltrated the website of the Texas National Guard, the organisation has confirmed.
Some visitors to the site have found themselves being redirected to a website that tries to coerce them into paying for fake security software.
Roger Thompson, chief research officer for security firm AVG Technologies which reported the breach, commented that once users without the relevant patch are exposed to the hack, their computers become "hopelessly nailed".
Recently the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team warned that phishing scams related to Hurricane Gustav were set to rise as hackers try to take advantage of the state of unease among the public.
This kind of threat strengthens the case for the use of website monitoring software so that firms may protect and prepare themselves against fraudulent activity related to their website.
In June this year, the banking body Apacs reported that the number of phishing attacks on British customers rose 180 per cent compared to the same period in 2007, with 21,000 cases reported in the first half of 2008. |
