The corporate cost of internet downtime

2008/08/21

Well-known high street retailers who have lost significant online sales revenue are also at risk of losing customers to rival firms, an internet security expert has claimed.

One of the more high profile cases was that of Supermarket giant Sainsbury's whose recent downtime has cost an estimated £1 million in online transactions.

Sainsbury's Internet Service Provider (ISP) Cable & Wireless suffered technical problems which led to the outage.

Chief scientist at IT security firm Symantec Guy Bunker has said that there is nothing surprising about loss of revenue when a company goes offline but the losses also cannot be relied upon to return if the customer spending the money decides to spend it elsewhere.

He told iHotdesk: "For many businesses, the internet is their sole source of income - think of Amazon or eBay - not only would they lose money from the site being down, but also from losing their customers - who would defect to another service that is 'up'."

Mr Bunker added that the two principle causes of internet downtime were a result of broken hardware or a failed network but said that such problems can be minimised with a high availability solution.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18743014-ADNFCR
