The numbers of internet users will rise by 2020 | | 2010/01/05 | | By 2020 the number of people using the internet will increase from the 1.7 billion people Internet World Stats says are currently surfing the web.
In a round-up of the ten ways the internet will change by PC World, Carolyn Duffy Marsan from network news and trend analysis company NetworkWorld summarised some of the key alterations that would be seen in the World Wide Web.
The round-up drew attention to the National Science Foundation forecast that the internet would have five billion users by 2020 and that scaling continues to be an issue for its future architecture.
It also highlighted that the web would be more geographically dispersed, with most of its growth over the next decade coming from developing countries.
According to Internet World Stats, the regions with the lowest penetration rates are Africa, Asia and the Middle East, while North America has the highest penetration rate of 74.2 per cent.
However, while the internet is expected to become greener and cloud computing will generate substantial revenue in the future, more hackers are expected to be attracted also.
As greater numbers of hackers will be attacking the internet "because more critical infrastructure like the electric grid will be online", it is important to use website monitoring services to pick up on any such problems with sites. |
