The smallest cyber-heist in world history? | | 2008/08/27 | | In response to an article in a Scottish Sunday newspaper, a statement from the Best Western Hotel chain has denied that it was the victim of the "biggest cyber-heist in world history".
The article, published in the Sunday Herald this week, claimed that a hacker based in India had infiltrated a computer used for reservations at one of Best Western's hotels in Berlin - one of 1,312 Europe-wide.
A malicious programme was then allegedly installed that could collect the personal details of every guest in every European Best Western since 2007.
However, the hotel firm has said that only one room affecting ten guests was compromised and they were in communication with those clients, credit card companies and payment systems to rectify the matter.
Law enforcement agencies including the FBI were also informed and are investigating the breach, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The chain has called the article "grossly unsubstantiated" after the paper claimed that the details of around eight million guests were likely to have been sold to an "underground network operated by the Russian mafia".
However, the paper is standing by the story after the journalist who broke it provided screen shots of what looked like Best Western's reservation system and personal details on one of the listed guests. |
