Trojan virus steals on an unprecedented scale | | 2008/11/04 | | A new Trojan virus has stolen data from half a million bank records, according to a leading internet security firm.
RSA said that the Sinowal virus also known as Torpig and Mebroot - had taken details from the servers of major financial institutions across the world, including bank accounts and credit cards.
Sean Brady, of RSA's security division, told the BBC: "The effect has been really global with over 2,000 domains compromised.
"This is a serious incident on a very noticeable scale and we have seen an increase in the number of trojans and their variants, particularly in the States and Canada."
Hacking on this scale underlines the importance for effective security safeguards in place to protect sensitive data, which can include the use of website monitoring software.
Among the countries reported to have been affected as well as the UK and US are Australia and Poland.
So far there are no figures available as to losses which may or may not have been incurred as a result of fraudulent use of the stolen details. |
