Twitter's failings cause mutual mockery | | 2008/07/10 | | Many web start-up companies were knocked off line in February when certain Amazon services that power those sites had a day of intermittent outages.
Those addicts who find that they can't gain access to Amazon, or indeed any of their favourite websites, are usually more than willing to fill blogs with tales of woe and angry criticism levelled at the companies who have let them down.
There are, perhaps, few places more prevalent with this kind of discussion than Twitter where users interact with each other on current personal news and opinions.
According to one web monitoring firm, Twitter itself went dark for 37 hours this year - more than any other major social networking site by some distance.
Twitter explained that its downtime was, and is, the outcome of rapidly increasing demand and fundamental weaknesses in its original architecture.
But rather than simply abandoning the service for something more reliable, Twitter users responded with a satirical campaign highlighting its short-comings.
Blog rants, YouTube parodies and "Is Twitter Down?" t-shirts to name but a few anger management strategies.
Speaking to The New York Times, Laura Fitton, a consultant and self-confessed passionate Twitter user, said: "This is a free service, it's not like anyone's life is depending on Twitter.
"Twitter is all about the things we discover we have in common, so right there, Twitter failing is a huge thing we have in common.
"It's fun to complain to each other and commiserate," she added. |
