Twitter traffic diverted thanks to hackers | | 2009/12/21 | | Twitter users were re-directed to the website of protest group the Iranian Cyber Army when the site was hacked early Friday morning.
The hackers managed to use login details to make domain name system (DNS) changes and cut off users from the service for about an hour.
Twitter said on its status page that the site's DNS records were temporarily compromised but have now been fixed and added that the company is looking into the underlying cause of the outage and will update with more information soon.
The page users of the microblogging service were sent to displayed text informing them that the Twitter site had been hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army.
It went on to read: "The USA think they are controlling and managing internet by their access, but they don't, we control and manage internet by our power."
Twitter has become one of the most popular sites this year, receiving high levels of traffic every day. If sites such as this were to suffer any problems or downtime, website monitoring services would pick up the issue and inform the site owner.
