Unplanned outage causes 'significant cost' | | 2009/05/29 | |
Unplanned system downtime has become "unacceptable" in today's always-on, multi-channel business climate, according to one expert. Duncan Harvey, director of business development EMEA at GoldenGate Software, says zero-downtime of business-critical systems is essential for retaining customers and maintaining financial controls. Writing for Continuity Central, Mr Harvey says: "Unplanned outage represents significant tangible cost to a business. "When the focus is on retaining customers and building loyalty, delivering zero or near-zero downtime - especially during migration projects - is now a business imperative." He also cites research by Warwick Business School in 2008, which found that downtimes can cost up to £350,000 for big global players such as Google. Website monitoring services and load testing are just some of the techniques employed by businesses to mitigate against such costs. Recently, Google was hit by a wide-scale outage that left millions unable to access Google News, the homepage and Gmail.
