US energy grid 'threatened by hackers' | | 2009/04/09 | | Hackers have penetrated the US energy grid leaving behind software that could disrupt the system, say security officials.
Current and former national security officers have warned that the spies, from China, Russia and other countries, could try to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure during a crisis or war.
A former Department of Homeland Security official told the Wall Street Journal: "There are intrusions, and they are growing," adding: "If we go to war with them, they will try to turn them on."
Many of the intrusions were not detected by the companies in charge of the infrastructure, but by US intelligence agencies, suggesting that they might not have made full use of website monitoring services.
Officials said that the motivation of the cyber-spies was not understood and they do not believe there is any immediate danger.
Last month, security firm IOActive warned that hackers could disrupt operations of the grid in people's homes with as little as $500 (£340).
