US ISP prepares for hurricane season

2008/05/09

A major US internet service provider has lifted the lid on its plans to cope with the Atlantic hurricane season this year.

AT&T is preparing both itself and its customers to deal with the consequences should a storm strike and has detailed ways in which internet users can soften the blow of losing connection.

Voice communications, video applications and text messaging are being used by the firm to "keep customers connected". Meanwhile, AT&T has announced its own networks have been toughened-up after heavy investment.

AT&T's president for the hurricane-vulnerable south-east region, commented: "We have continued to improve the reliability of our wireless services in hurricane-prone areas by installing more backup generators at critical sites, moving facilities to less vulnerable areas and improving our recovery efforts."

He added: "We are committed to keeping our customers connected, and we have taken steps to ensure our wireless networks are ready."

The US telecoms giant applies monitoring services to its networks 24/7 and also conducts drills to test its readiness in the event of a natural disaster.
