US malware 'still threatens web monitoring'

2008/08/05

The latest threat statistics research has shown that America has maintained its position at the top of the list of nations who are responsible for malware, viruses and spam.

In a report from managed security firm Network Box, July's numbers show the US is set to retain this unwanted crown for the foreseeable future, IT Pro reports.

Network Box internet security analyst Simon Heron, said that over 50 per cent of spam was originated in the US as far back as 2004.

He said: "The US still has a huge number of consumer PCs that are compromised and forming part of botnets.

"However, with the huge take up of broadband in Russia, Europe and China, it is likely that these geographical areas will catch up with the USA and probably overtake it."

Criminal internet usage is becoming increasingly globalised and distributed but the research is suggesting that the quantity of spam coming out of the US has a direct correlation to where hackers are finding the easiest targets.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18715972-ADNFCR
