Vandals caused Californian internet outage | | 2009/04/14 | | Vandals caused a massive phone and internet outage in the San Jose on Thursday, AT&T officials have reported.
Tens of thousands of people were left without landlines, mobile phone and internet service after the suspects intentionally cut through fibre optic cables.
Also affected were emergency services, cash dispensers and credit and debit cards across three counties in California.
"Someone purposely cut these cables," said AT&T spokesman John Britton. "They didn't have concern for anyone. We will find who did it."
The discovery that vandals were responsible for the outage put paid to possible earlier speculation that the outage could have resulted from a lack of website monitoring services.
US newspaper the San Francisco Chronicle reported that several people had to be driven to hospital as they were unable to summon emergency ambulances by dialling 911.
During the blackout, AT&T took advantage of social networking site Twitter to keep customers updated about the power cut.
