Verizon joins Europe-Asia data cable group | | 2008/05/08 | | An undersea cable is to be developed by a group of companies endeavouring to improve global network connections - including Verizon Communications.
Verizon announced the move to join the Europe India Gateway consortium no Tuesday, reports Telecom Tiger, to help develop the system which will link three continents.
It has been revealed that the cable network will stretch for 9,000 miles at a total cost of $700 million (£357 million) although the exact financial input of Verizon has not been revealed.
Communications via the network in Europe, the Middle East and India are expected to be operational by 2010.
New York-based Verizon was founded in 2000 under the merging of Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp with the aim of developing global communications.
The company delivers broadband solutions to over 67 million customers, with a reported revenue of $93.5 billion in 2007.
