Virgin Media suffer email 'spam attack' | | 2008/10/14 | | Thousands of Virgin Media customers have been virtually cut off from their email accounts for up to four days, it has been reported. A mass spamming attack rendered as many as tens of thousands of customers with reduced or no service to their online mail accounts. A spokesman for the company said that the accounts had been temporarily suspended to remove the blockage in the system caused the level of spam mail, designed to overload the system. With the increasing use of online utilities such as webmail, these kinds of attacks highlight the importance of effective security measures, including website monitoring software, to respond to threats and attacks. Virgin Media have been quick to assure customers that nothing has been lost, and the denial of service was only a temporary situation. The spokesperson said: "This was due to a suspected spam attack suffered by our e-mail supplier which also affected a number of other ISPs. No customers on our cable service were affected. "All customers are able to access e-mail again now, though due to a large queue of undelivered e-mail messages, there may be a short delay before some e-mails reach customers' accounts." |
