Warning given over internet banking security

2008/06/16

Consumers affected by online banking fraud may not be able to rely on their banks to reimburse them if they have a history of failing to take adequate security measures to protect against the crime, they have been warned.

The online banking section of the most up-to-date Banking Code from the British Bankers Association highlights the fact that failure to comply with article 12.9 - which stipulates that PCs used for online banking should be secured through the use of antivirus and spyware software - could make consumers liable for losses.

However, a spokesperson for Apacs, the UK payments association, has noted that consumers should see the guidelines as helpful rather than galling.

"It's advice. Rather than putting any obligation on the customer, it's just offering advice to the customer. So it shouldn't be seen as putting a burden on them," she said in an interview with Silicon.com.

"It's exactly what bank policy has always been. The banking practices and what they've been doing - it hasn't changed at all."

Online banking fraud losses fell from £33.5 million in 2006 to £22.6 million in 2007, the Times reports.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18640816-ADNFCR
