Web monitoring reveals BBC Olympic coverage popularity

2008/08/21

The BBC's online coverage of the Beijing Olympics has proved popular among fans visiting the broadcaster's website.

According to figures from ISP PlusNet, traffic levels were nearly twice as high during the opening ceremony than normal.

There was also a 140 per cent increase in usage during the games themselves.

Website monitoring firm Hitwise suggests that the surge in popularity could be because of the BBC's Live Action broadcasting technology that allows users to watch a number of events at any one time.

Robin Goad of Hitwise told Web User: "As the official UK broadcaster of the games, the BBC has benefited significantly from the weekend's success."

Meanwhile, in the US, Yahoo's coverage of the Olympics has proved the most popular among sports fans online.

According to web site performance monitoring research by Neilson Online, online viewing reached its peak during the lunchtime period, which no doubt had many bosses keeping their fingers crossed that the network could cope with the strain.
