Website monitoring 'could check age' | | 2008/12/30 | | Website monitoring may soon be used to check the age of people trying to access content, the culture secretary has said.
Andy Burnham said that the government is looking at ways of preventing younger people viewing unsuitable content online.
He told the BBC that he believes internet service providers (ISPs) should provide a safe place for children, meaning they would need website monitoring solutions to check the content of sites.
"The internet is becoming a more and more pervasive entity in all our lives and yet the content standards online are not as clear as we've all been used in traditional media," he explained to the broadcaster.
"I think we do need to have a debate now about clearer signposting and labelling online because it can be quite a confusing world, particularly for parents who are trying to ensure their children are only accessing appropriate stuff."
Earlier this month, the chief security officer at SecureTrading, John Lyons, warned that credit cards are no longer a suitable way of verifying the age of someone buying goods online.
He revealed that many children aged 14 and above now receive the cards.
