Website monitoring 'must take into account disabled users' | | 2008/07/29 | | Businesses are ignoring a sizeable portion of the online market by failing to take into account the needs of disabled users with website monitoring and web accessibility programmes, according to a web researcher.
There are currently around eight and a half million disabled internet users in the UK of whom three and a half million have difficulty in using a regular computer keyboard, according to Graham Charlton from e-consultancy.
Firms that fail to take into consideration the disabled user as part of website monitoring and web development could also find that search engine rankings suffer as a portion of the market is excluded.
"Basically if you're not running an accessible website, you're going to miss out on a huge potential market," Mr Charlton said, pointing out that "obviously they all have different levels of difficulties with reading etcetera, but three and a half million people are unable to use a normal keyboard".
He added: "The key thing is that if your website is not accessible to these people, you are missing out on a vast potential market and the other thing is that if your website's not accessible for disabled users, the chances are that your search engine optimisation is not that great either." |
