Website monitoring could prevent DNS flaw exploitation

2008/08/26

Dan Kaminsky, the discoverer of the hole in the Domain Name System (DNS), has recently said that the flaw has already been explored but the first forays into full-blown exploitation are pointing to something big in the foreseeable future.

Security firm MessageLabs concurred by suggesting that "the online underworld is poised to launch targeted attacks in the coming weeks," following a 52 per cent rise in suspicious DNS traffic in the last two months.

Some of that traffic could, however, be caused by security researchers gathering information on the problem and, according to Mr Kaminsky, there is no accurate way to determine what percentage of the traffic is malicious from that which may prove helpful.

Mr Kaminsky told ZD Net: "People are sweeping the internet looking for vulnerable systems."

DNS is the system which translates web addresses into the numerical IP addresses necessary to connect web users to their desired site and acts as a virtual phone directory for the internet.

The discovery of the major flaw around five months ago, and the subsequent publication of its details, could enable hackers to divert surfers to genuine-looking fake sites even when the correct address is used.

This would add a new dimension of ease to unscrupulous cyber criminals in extracting sensitive and personal data from web users using online banking for example.

"What they have in store, we don't know," Mr Kaminsky added.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18747373-ADNFCR
