Website monitoring counts Olympic opportunists | | 2008/08/13 | | Internet security firms using website monitoring techniques have shown that the Beijing Olympic Games has proved irresistible to many hackers who are taking advantage of heavy internet traffic and interest in the event.
A spokesman for security company Symantec, Con Mallom told the BBC: "The Beijing Olympics is gearing up to be one of the biggest events of the year and hackers and spammers will see it as a massive opportunity to compromise the unwary."
According to Symantec, there was a massive rise in the flow of junk email just before the Games' opening ceremony.
Many malevolent mails employed methods to try to get web users to visit fake sites while others threatened malware attacks and security compromises via malicious email attachments.
Some also prompted surfers to respond to a prize they were told they had won in a non-existent Olympic lottery.
"Members of the public have to remember that they should not open emails or click on links from unknown sources no matter how many gold medals they are offering," added Mr Mallom. |
