Website monitoring crowns the Swiss the big cheese of spam | | 2008/08/29 | | New research by internet security firm MessageLabs has found that Switzerland received the largest bulk of spam email and viral infections of anywhere in the world in July.
Its high-risk status was attributed to its wide use of high bandwidth internet, the concentrated presence of top companies and its multi-language culture, Swisster reports.
The percentage of spam was found to be higher than the global average of 75.1 per cent weighing in at massive 84.2 per cent of all emails sent.
Spammers are particularly attracted to large, high-profile corporations, and with so many top firms in the finance and pharmaceutical sectors having headquarters in the central European country, the results have surprise few people.
Senior analyst at MessageLabs Paul Wood told Swisster: "Although English is still the most prevalent language, one of the trends in spam is that it becoming more tailored towards local languages.
"With its four languages, this makes Switzerland more attractive."
While an average of one in every 148 emails received in the 86 countries covered by the survey contained something sinister, Switzerland suffered from viruses hidden in one out of every 60 emails received in the country. |
