Website monitoring experts say 'fear the botnet' | | 2008/08/13 | | Concentrated use of botnets to launch mass website attacks is the most concerning issue to arise so far in 2008, website monitoring experts claim.
The midyear security threat report from Marshal Trace has revealed that spam has doubled and is increasingly likely to arrive in the world's inboxes carrying super-virulent bugs.
It also said that cyber-crooks are using a mixture of malware and links to hacked websites to ply their trade.
The Marshal Trace team found 1.5 million botnet infected websites in May 2008 alone and detected an increase in Trojan malware infections.
Vice president of products at Marshal Trace Bradley Anstis said: "Spammers are moving en masse to the web and distributing malware on a scale not seen before.
"Criminals are not bothering to set up their own sites; they are infecting legitimate sites with malicious code."
He went on to say that, in order to fight the rising sophistication of threats, companies should launch a combined counterattack force of email security portals with protection against spam.
Mr Anstis also suggested employing different web gateway products that are able to scan content in real-time rather than use the process of URL filtering. |
