Website monitoring for backing systems is essential | | 2008/08/27 | | A developer at the internet services company Netcraft has said that website monitoring reduces the possibility of a website spending downtime due a technical fault.
Paul Mutton said: "Monitoring a website can help reduce the risk to some extent.
"It's certainly a good idea to know when a site has gone down so you can do something about it."
According to Mr Mutton, a site's individual backing system could also benefit from monitoring services because there is little point in having an accessible website if the backing system does not allow it to function properly.
Many point to the outages suffered by Cable & Wireless, whose internet services provide food giant Sainsbury's with their online needs, to illustrate the importance of website monitoring.
At least two high profile outages cost the retailer an estimated £1 million in lost sales due to technical problems and break-ins.
In addition, a reward scheme to lure customers back added £200,000 to the cost of the downtime and the cost of non-recoupable custom is open to speculation, which demonstrates the need for comprehensive website monitoring. |
