Website monitoring needed to fight physical attacks | | 2008/08/12 | | A recent conference in Las Vegas has highlighted the need for effective website monitoring after security experts gave demonstrations of a new kind of 'physical attack' on computer systems.
The founders of Atlanta-based Errata Security, Robert Graham and David Maynor, demonstrated a method they employed to test a client company's internal wireless network security.
Having first modified an Apple iPhone, they sent it to a randomly-named fictional employee at the client company in the hope that the undeliverable package would sit in the mailroom while the iPhone quietly scanned the area for unprotected wireless networks.
A package of this kind could theoretically remain in situ for days but in reality, only a few minutes are needed to penetrate a system.
Another security expert, Eric Schmiedl, has also made the unnerving observation that falling prices in this area of technology and hardware has made this type of attack accessible to small-time crooks.
Mr Graham went on to say these attacks are pointless in the presence of adequate security measures but pointed out the likelihood of a repeat attack elsewhere when the sleeping enemy within is unwittingly return mailed to the would-be hacker. |
