Website monitoring to police fake Gustav appeal sites | | 2008/09/01 | | Lightning can strike twice in the same place and just as Hurricane Katrina is set to be outdone by her big brother Gustav, the cyber-vultures are circling to try to take advantage of the large sums of cash and many bank details that will, no doubt, be generated by the relief effort that follows in its wake.
Internet security experts have warned that almost 100 domains have appeared over the weekend containing the words "Gustav", "charity", "relief" and "hurricane" and people should check to discover which sites are genuinely concerned with the impending disaster.
A Louisiana TV station has recently reported that 'Gustav Phishing attacks' have already been noted, Computer World reports. Director of the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Centre (ISC) Marcus Sachs said in a post to the ISC research blog: "On the day Katrina hit New Orleans, hundreds of donation sites appeared online and many, if not most, were scam sites.
"Well this time around it looks like the people who like to register domain names in anticipation of a storm's arrival have already started registering them for Gustav."
While several of the domains have yet to be filled with content, a few do appear to be parked in readiness and a handful did indeed lead to legitimate charities but one site - gustavcharity.com - simply redirects users to the website of the evangelical Christian organisation "Samaritan's Purse."
On the upside, a Katrina anti-fraud task force was set up and with their experience it should prove more difficult for a relief scam to succeed this time. |
