Website outage caused by 'cracker attacks' | | 2008/06/02 | | Attacks which caused an outage experienced on the homepage of US internet service provider (ISP) Comcast did not effect the firm's servers or leave customer data vulnerable, according to reports.
An attack which took place late on Wednesday (May 28th) to Thursday (May 29th) redirected the website's visitors to a spoof page bragging of the hackers' exploits.
Comcast's webmail service was disrupted by the attack but the company insisted that no customer data had been compromised.
An investigation is underway to determine how the attackers were able to change Domain Name System records.
Experts at bi-tech.net said: "According to Network Solutions, the company responsible for managing the DNS records for Comcast's web presence, the records were changed by an individual who logged in to the Comcast control panel using a valid username and password."
Outages can often be prevented with the use of web service monitoring and website status monitoring.
