When it all goes wrong it's trauma | | 2008/07/09 | | Web monitoring services are agreed that the problem with companies like Google - who want us to store as much professional and personal information online as possible - is that they cannot pledge that the data will be more easily accessed than keeping a hard copy in a drawer.
This Utopian ideal needs web services to be available 24/7 and even the internet's big boys would be foolish to guarantee that. Last Christmas, Yahoo's internet retailer system, Yahoo Merchant Solutions, went offline for 14 hours at a crucial time of the trading year, taking many e-commerce companies down with them.
The root causes of these problems are broad-ranging be it system upgrades with unintended side-effects, human error or even a simple power outage.
Recently, an electrical problem which affected a US web hosting company, knocked thousands of e-businesses off the internet for up to five days.
Web entrepreneur, Grant Burhans described his four days offline as "prolonged torture".
Former Amazon executive, Jesse Robbins, whose remit was to keep Amazon online from 2004 to 2006, says that the disappointment over systems failure is reasonable.
Speaking to the New York Times, he said: "When these sites go away, it's a sudden loss.
"It's like you are standing in the middle of Macy's and the power goes out, when the thing you depend on to live your daily life suddenly goes away, it's trauma." |
