Wi-fi networks without web monitoring vulnerable to 'wardriving' | | 2008/08/06 | | Companies in the US such as BJ's Wholesale Club, DSW Shoe Warehouse, OfficeMax, Barnes & Noble and Sports Authority have been targeted by hackers in the biggest ever ID theft campaign.
It is believed that since 2003, the identities and bank details of millions of shoppers in the US, Canada and Great Britain have been stolen, the Telegraph reports.
A gang of eleven men have been charged with stealing and selling credit and debit card details which were obtained by breaking into shops' computer systems through unprotected wireless connections.
TJX, the parent company of T K Maxx has, in the past, admitted that a security breach led to the details of "at least 45.6 million" cards being lost or stolen since 2005.
A spokesman from the US Department of Justice (DoJ) said that widespread losses were suffered by banks, retailers and shoppers as the criminal network stretched from America to East Asia via Eastern Europe which is where most of the arrests were made.
Currently the only one in police custody, Albert Gonzalez of Miami is accused of 'wardriving' which involves driving around searching for unprotected wi-fi networks.
Once found, software can be used to download bank and other details which are then sold on to gangs who created customised magnetic strips in order to plunder bank accounts the world over. |
