Widespread consumer suspicion of business' data storage | | 2008/09/29 | | The British public are largely mistrustful when it comes to the safety of their personal information, according to new research.
Four fifths of consumers do not trust businesses to secure their personal information, the report by online security firm Symantec revealed.
Of the companies surveyed three quarters said they would expect to lose customers as a result of a loss of data or security breach, with over half expecting the impact to be felt immediately.
Consumers' concerns demonstrates how much importance is placed on the internet by so many members of the public, highlighting the importance of website monitoring to reassure consumers with a reliable online service.
Commenting on the findings, Symantec senior vice-president John Brigden said: "Nearly 60 per cent of companies said it would be a lot harder to attract new customers once the reputation had been tarnished."
The UK has been hit by a number of scandals involving data loss or theft, from a number of banks being criticised after hackers breached their websites to the government admitting a series of losses of data media and computer hardware containing information on members of the public. |
