YouTube downtime creates a stir on Twitter | | 2010/01/21 | |
Video-sharing website YouTube experienced half an hour of downtime this week, leading to users of the website posting complaints on social networking site Twitter.
Rumours of a possible cyber attack on the site were also spread via Twitter, with tweeters speculating over whether the site had been a target of the same Iranian Cyber Army that had hacked Twitter and Chinese search engine Baidu.
Last week Baidu's domain name registration was tampered with by the hackers, leading to inaccessibility to the site.
Those that were trying to access the YouTube site either saw a message saying "Http/1.1 Service Unavailable" or "500 Internal Server error".
Some users reported that although the main entry page was inaccessible, if a direct link for a video was clicked it would still work.
The site, which receives tens of millions of hits every day, has since been restored and the flow of traffic has returned back to normal.
Although news of the downtime YouTube was experiencing was spread via Twitter, website monitoring services can also be put in place to inform the site owner if a site is inaccessible by users so the problem can be fixed. |
